Fraud Prevention Tips

July 1st, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

Courtesy of the DPL-Surveillance-Equipment.com
Loss Prevention Team

Current areas where mail order, telephone order, and Internet fraud are most prevalent include:

* West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia), Asia (Indonesia, Singapore)

* Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Romania, and Russia)

Suspicious Behavior and Unusual Requests

Relay Calls:
A relay call is an operator-assisted telephone call, usually used by
someone who is hearing impaired. While this is a valid service,
criminals are also using the service to place fraudulent orders.

Customers Ordering Large Quantities of the Same or Similar Item:

Customers
who provide multiple card numbers for the same purchase, especially
when the card numbers are only different by the last few numbers.

Requests for Overnight Delivery, Without Regard to Cost:

Customers who request immediate processing of the order and want the tracking number used for the shipment ASAP.

Customers
who place phone orders, requesting immediate processing of the order,
and then advising they will have someone come to the store location to
pick-up the product.

Requests for delivery to an alternate
address, other than the billing address, or shipment to a freight
forwarder. (Criminals will use United States based re-shippers to avoid
detection of foreign shipments).

Requests for merchandise you do not sell.  Most common requests are for cell phones and laptop computers.

Business Communication via a free email service (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc).

NOTE:
With today’s technology it is possible to alter a photocopy of a credit
card or personal identification such as a driver’s license or passport.
Sometimes a fraud order will include a faxed or e-mailed photocopy of
the card to gain your trust. These photocopies do not guarantee that
you are dealing with the correct cardholder. Always verify the order
information with your Authorization center before proceeding with the
order.

Four Quick Prevention Steps:

1.
Before processing an order obtained via relay call, contact your Voice
Authorization Center or place a direct call to the credit card issuer.

2.
Verify the cardholder’s address by using the Address Verification
System (AVS). Your terminal can be set up for the AVS program, which
allows you to include an AVS request with an authorization request. You
will receive a result code indicating whether the address given matches
the address the issuer has on file for that account.

3. Card Verification Value (CVV2) VISA and Card Validation Code
(CVC2) MASTERCARD are verification requests that can be added to most
terminals. This system will verify the three-digit code printed on the
back of a credit card (or four-digit code printed on the front of an
American Express credit card). You will receive either a "match" or "no
match" response from the card-issuing bank if CVV2 is provided at the
time of the authorization.

4. Authorizations:
Get authorization for the full amount of the sale. Do not split a
declined transaction into smaller increments to obtain an
authorization. If an authorization request is declined, request another
form of payment other than a credit card. (Be aware that there are
counterfeit check schemes that involve overpayment with a counterfeit
check and a request to wire the difference to the overseas customer.
This causes a loss of both the merchandise ordered and the money that
made up the difference.) An authorization code does not guarantee that
a transaction will not be disputed later. An authorization code simply
identifies that the amount of credit requested for this particular
transaction is available on the card. An authorization code does not
protect you in the event of a Chargeback regarding unauthorized
transactions or disputes involving the quality or delivery of goods and
services.

NOTE: Use
of CVV2, CVC2, and AVS can lessen a non face-to-face transaction’s risk
of fraud by providing better information on which you can make a better
business decision. However, CVV2, CVC2, and AVS do not eliminate
Chargebacks, nor absolve the merchant of their liability for
Chargebacks associated with processing credit card transactions. For
more information about AVS and CVV2, CVC2, contact 1-800-725-1243. If
you are an Internet merchant, contact your web provider for additional
fraud settings that may be available to you through their service.

THE FUTURE OF HAND-HELD EXPLOSIVES DETECTION

April 28th, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

DPL-EVD3500 HAND-HELD EXPLOSIVES DETECTOR $23,900.00

The
technology built into this unit is actually superior to what is offered
in other hand-held explosives detectors and also the cost of
maintenance is lower, less complicated and it detects a wider range of
explosives.

Disadvantages of IMS Systems

IMS
instruments normally contain a small quantity of radioactive material
as an ionizing source. This radioactive source does not pose any health
risks if the system is operated properly, but simply having such a
source may lead to extra paperwork and regulatory oversight.

The
drift time associated with a given ion is dependent on atmospheric
pressure, and can thus change during inclement weather or when the
spectrometer is moved more than a few hundred feet in elevation. These
conditions require little more than routine, periodic recalibration,
but users need to be aware of this issue.

Another drawback of
IMS technology is peak resolution in mixtures or “realworld samples”.
Two different materials that form ions of similar size and mass may
appear as a single broad peak rather than two distinct peaks in an IMS
spectrum.

Disadvantages of GC/SAW Systems:

The
main advantage of GC/SAW detectors is also their biggest disadvantage.
The GC/SAW is nonspecific and the presence of other chemicals may make
explosives detection more difficult. Additionally, a gas container is
necessary for operating the instrument.

Disadvantages of Reagent-based Systems:

The biggest disadvantage of color-based systems is the reliance on the operator’s interpretation of color, as follows:

• Identifying the specific type of explosive present when a positive result occurs is not always possible.

Only the specific colors in the instructions can be judged a positive
detection. Other discoloration is possible, but should be judged
negative.

• Operators may have some degree of color blindness.
Additionally, vapor sampling cannot be performed and detection is very dependent on sample concentration.

Disadvantages of GC/MS Systems:

Some MS systems require a gas supply or vacuum pump. The sample analysis time can be relatively long.

Introducing the DPL-EVD3500 Hand-held Explosives Detector. Ready to operate in only 5-30 seconds. The DPL-EVD3500
is the world’s first and most recognized portable explosives trace
detector that uses Luminol Chemiluminescence (Chemilumina). The DPL-EVD3500
is the only portable device capable of detecting the presence of all
threat explosives, including ICAO taggants, military plastics and TATP.

*
DPL-EVD3500 HAND-HELD EXPLOSIVES DETECTOR does not utilize a
radioactive ionizing source and thus users can avoid some of the
paperwork and possible regulatory oversight that may be associated with
detectors that use radioactive sources.

The DPL-EVD3500
looks for solvent based as well nitro based explosives (90% of
explosives are nitrogen oxide based NO2). The new "Designer bombs"
frequently are solvent based i.e., acetone, peroxide etc. The DPL-EVD3500
catches them all. The technology for the "detection principle" is
Chemiluminescence historically the most proven detection method but
only used in labs in machines that cost $400K and are huge and do not
go in the field. They are considered scientific testing and analytical
equipment.

We have the only patent on this tech in field
hand-held units— This is incredible! It’s the best solution available
in a portable device by a HUGE margin! The competition can NOT come
close to it. It is more selective and sensitive than the EVD-3000 and
ALL other handhelds.

There are far fewer "false positives" from
inaccurate detection of non explosives (false alarms). It has very
advanced software that makes it very easy to operate. It is quite
robust and field worthy. Lasts a lot longer in the field prior to
maintenance. Cleans and clears itself after contamination by a rich
explosive.

The main thing is there is no other device (handheld) that can detect near the variety of explosives the DPL-EVD3500 can.

It
also does not use any external carrier gas or radioactive source
(unlike others). If portability, quick detection and clear, accurate
results are crucial, then this is the explosives detector needed. The DPL-EVD3500
offers extremely fast and stable detection with very high selectivity
for explosives and immunity to humidity or contamination problems. The
DPL-EVD3500
detects traces of particulates and vapors, allowing for noninvasive
searches of luggage, mail, vehicles, documents and containers.

Operating the DPL-EVD3500 :

The DPL-EVD3500
is flexible and easy to operate, offering both vapor and particulate
sampling without the use of an external carrier gas or radioactive
source. Vapors are sampled directly via the sampling nozzle.
Particulates are sampled by swiping a suspected object with a cotton
glove or other means and transferring any traces to the unit. This dual
capability enables users to select the most suitable method of sampling
for the explosives of interest. The
DPL-EVD3500
starts processing samples immediately and gives results in just
seconds. All results are indicated on the LCD graphical and numerical
display.

* Fast and Proven: The DPL-EVD3500
has proven to be capable of detecting plastic and high vapor pressure
explosives rapidly-giving clear results you can trust. Luminol
Chemiluminescence is an ASTMEPA standard method for atmospheric
monitoring of nitrogen dioxide.

* Sensitive and Selective: The DPL-EVD3500
can detect minute traces (low nanogram level) of C-4, TNT, Dynamite,
PETN, Semtex, EGDN,DMNB, RDX, ANFO, Amonium Nitrate, Urea Nitrate,
Nitroglycerine and TATP, with low false alarm levels and few
interferents.Immune to variations in humidity and environmental
conditions.

* Portable: The DPL-EVD3500
is selfcontained, lightweight, less than 3 kg (6.6 lbs), and comes in a
fully equipped, rugged carrying case -ready to use when and where
needed.

* No Radioactive Isotopes or Radioactivity

* Easy to Use: The DPL-EVD3500
is ready for operation within thirty seconds from turn on. When
necessary, any minimal cleaning takes only a few seconds. The simple
push of a button automatically activates the sampling and analysis mode.

Results are displayed on an easy-to-read LCD making the DPL-EVD3500 ideal for all non-technical personnel. ICAO taggants and tagged plastic explosives.

Portable Advanced Explosives Detector

* Police & Bomb Squads
* Airports
* Border Crossings
* Military Defense
* Seaports and Containerships
* Field or Forensic Use

The DPL-EVD3500 is ideal for:

* Nuclear Facilities
* Embassies or Consulates
* Courts of Law
* Postal Stations
* Corporate or VIP Headquarters
* Commercial
* Correctional

Future Outlook on Hand-Held Explosives Detection

The
explosives detection techniques discussed here are expected to remain
the principal techniques for use in law enforcement and other
applications
for at least the next several years. The expected trend for new equipment
is
toward more portable, miniaturized units, rather than improvements in
sensitivity. The sensitivity of current instruments is already adequate
for most applications. The miniaturization of equipment will likely
reduce the cost of the equipment. Another possible future trend is to
have systems that combine two or more detection technologies into a
single system.

Phishing/Scamming: Why You Shouldn’t Take The Bait!

April 19th, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

Phishing/Scamming

One
of the primary reasons for the severe increase in phishing/scamming
among and individuals and smaller organizations is that online
criminals believe these institutions and people do not possess the
resources, knowledge or employees to protect themselves or respond to a
phishing/scamming attack. Many of the larger banks, retailers and ISPs
have already been targeted and, therefore, have implemented
countermeasures.

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG),
a global, pan-industrial and law enforcement association chartered to
eliminate phishing, pharming and e-mail spoofing, phishing attacks have
reached an all-time high. Last November, 16,882 attacks were reported,
up from 8,975 in November 2004. And these attacks do not come without
substantial risks. Victims of identity theft have experienced
everything from having their bank accounts depleted to having hundreds
of credit card transactions falsely charged to them, to having luxury
cars purchased in their name.

How Does Phishing Work?

Phishers
do not need access to an organization’s network to implement a phishing
scam. They can simply browse a company’s Web site, grab screenshots of
the customer log-in page and mount a copy of that page onto another
server.

From there, a phisher/scammer can target an
organization’s customers, sending them e-mails (or by making phone
calls) that appear to be from a legitimate source, leading the client
to the spoofed log-in page where they are tricked into revealing
confidential account information. Once entered, the customer is
immediately directed back to the legitimate Web site. Therefore, there
is little to alert the customer that they have been scammed. From the
earliest examples, which were easily detectable (often containing
obvious grammatical errors); phishing e-mails have grown in
sophistication and design to the point of being nearly
indistinguishable from the real thing. Phishing/scamming appeals to a
customer’s sense of panic, maintaining that there is an emergency
situation that demands the immediate verification of account
information or the account will be closed.

Although there are
tools available to detect when someone is scanning an organization’s
site and retrieving its graphics, many times the activity is
legitimate. Therefore, security analysts will end up with false
positives. In other instances, phishers are able to dynamically
retrieve the graphics from an organization’s customer log-in page
almost instantly. By the time the company realizes it is being scammed,
a bogus site has already been launched.

Network security
companies also are beginning to see phishers use a combination of
phishing and hacking to launch scams against their clients. Thus, if
one phishing site is taken down, another automatically pops up. In one
particular case, the phishers hacked into 11 computers in 11 different
countries and used them as platforms to host the sites, using
compromised desktops to send fraudulent e-mails.

Unfortunately,
phishing scams have evolved to not only target an organization’s
customers, but also their employees. Termed "spear phishing," this type
of scam is designed to wrangle information out of unsuspecting
colleagues so that the phisher/scammer can then access secure areas of
corporate networks.

One recent event targeted executives,
including CEOs, of numerous credit unions across the country. The
messages, appearing to be from a credit union affiliate, asked
executives to confirm that their company was a federally recognized
institution. Recipients who clicked on the link were taken to a Web
page that attempted to download a Trojan horse onto their desktops.

In
most cases, anti-virus software blocked the Trojan. If an attack had
been successful, then the phisher/scammer could have potentially gained
access to systems that control thousands of bank accounts, rather than
just one or two.

The VoIP Threat: SPIT

Yet
another emerging technology that has the potential to be rife with
phishing/scamming threats is VoIP. As more and more companies and home
users adopt VoIP systems, the potential for phishers to spam
individuals and solicit personal information increases dramatically.
Termed spam over Internet telephony (SPIT), a phisher can literally set
up a computer to randomly dial hundreds of phone numbers leaving a
voicemail message. Through VoIP, this voicemail is automatically
transmitted into the user’s e-mail inbox. When played, the sound file
can appear to be very authentic; making the call-to-action appears to
be legitimate, thus leading the unsuspecting victim to provide their
bank account or personal information.

How to Protect Yourself

1.
If you’re selling products from a website always verify your customers
identity the old-fashioned way, by talking to your customer and also by
calling the actual credit card issuer to make sure you’re selling to
the person that is calling you for the sell.

2. If you’re called by anyone and asked to provide personal information over the phone hang-up immediately.

3. Only ship to the actual “verified” billing address.

4. If you have to accept a “check” wait at least 7-10 days for it to clear prior to shipping.

5. Require wire transfers for all international orders unless you’re able to follow the guidelines in step 1.

6.
Be aware that these scammers will often use the telephone company’s
“relay service” in order to hide their true accent and/or identity.

7. Be aware of “instant messages” that they use to cause you to ship to another (unverified) address.

8. 80% of these scammers will try to get you to ship to Nigeria (W. Africa) while calling from the UK.

9.
If skeptical, insist on getting a call back telephone number (and check
it by calling) while also requiring that they call you also to verify
their identity.

10. If they are outside of the USA and insist on
using Money Orders, E-Checks, (Western Union) Bid Pay or Cashiers
Checks you probably are being scammed!

It is apparent from the
statistics that phishing/scamming attacks are not going away any time
soon. However, as the old adage goes, "The best defense is a good
offense."

How to Survive a Kidnapping

March 13th, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

Kidnappings

Kidnapping
is a terrifying experience, but you possess more personal resources
than you may be aware of to cope with the situation. Remember, you are
only of value to them alive, and they want to keep you that way.

The
common hostage responses of fear, denial, and withdrawal are all
experienced in varying degrees. You may be blindfolded, drugged,
handled roughly, or even stuffed in the trunk of a car. If drugs are
administered, do not resist. Their purpose will be to sedate you and
make you more manageable; these same drugs may actually help you to get
control of your emotions, which should be your immediate goal. If
conscious, follow your captors’ instructions.

Cell Phone Stun Gun

Captivity

A
hostage-taking situation is at its worst at the onset. The terrorists
are nervous and unsure, easily irritated, often irrational. It is a
psychologically traumatic moment for the hostage. Violence may be used
even if the hostage remains passive, but resistance could result in
death.

If taken hostage, your best defense is passive
cooperation. You may be terrified, but try to regain your composure as
soon as possible and to organize your thoughts. Being able to behave
rationally increases your chances for survival. The more time that
passes, the better your chances of being released alive.

Behavior Suggestions

Each captivity is different, but some behavior suggestions apply to most:

  • Try to establish some kind of rapport with your captors. Family is a
universal subject. Avoid political dialogues, but listen attentively to
    their point of view. If you know their language, listen and observe;
    and if addressed, use it.

  • Plan on a lengthy stay, and determine to keep track of the passage of
time. Captors may attempt to confuse your sense of time by taking your
watch, keeping you in a windowless cell, or serving meals at odd hours.
However, you can approximate time by noting, for example, changes in
temperatures between night and day; the frequency and intensity of
outside noises—traffic, whistles, birds; and by observing the alertness
    of guards.

  • Maintain your dignity and self-respect at all times.

  • Manage your time by setting up schedules for simple tasks, exercises, daydreaming, housekeeping.

  • Stun Baton: 500,000 Volts

    Build
relations with fellow captives and with the terrorists. If hostages are
held apart, devise ways to communicate with one another. Where hostages
are moved back and forth, to bathrooms for example, messages can be
written and left. However, do not jeopardize your safety or the safety
or treatment of others if attempting to communicate with fellow
    captives seems too risky.

  • Maintain your physical and mental health; it is critical to exercise
body and mind. Eat food provided without complaint; keep up your
strength. Request medical treatment or special medicines if required.

  • Establish exercise and relaxation programs. Exercise produces a healthy
tiredness and gives you a sense of accomplishment. If space is
confined, do isometrics. Relaxation reduces stress. Techniques include
meditation, prayer, daydreaming. · Keep your mind active; read anything
available. Write, even if you are not allowed to retain your writings.
If materials are not available, mentally compose poetry or fiction, try
to recall Scripture, design a house, even “play tennis” (as one hostage
    did).
  • HOSTAGE TRACKER

  • Take note of the characteristics of your captors and surroundings:
their habits, speech, contacts; exterior noises (typical of city or
country); and other distinctive sounds. This information could prove
    very valuable later.

If selected for early release, consider it
an opportunity to help remaining hostages. Details you have observed on
the terrorists and the general situation can assist authorities with a
    rescue.

    You
can expect to be accused of working for the government’s intelligence
service, to be interrogated extensively, and to lose weight. You may be
put in isolation; your captives may try to disorient you. It is
important that you mentally maintain control.

    Avoidance of Capture or Escape

    Executive Bullet-Proof Vest

    Efforts
to avoid capture or to attempt escape have in most cases been futile.
The decision, however, is a personal one, although it could affect
fellow hostages by placing them in jeopardy. Several other
    considerations should be weighed.

To have any chance of success,
you should be in excellent physical condition and mentally prepared to
react before the terrorists have consolidated their position. This,
also, is the riskiest psychological time. You would need to have a plan
in mind, and possibly have been trained in special driving tactics or
    other survival skills.

If you are held in a country in which you
would stand out because of race or other physical characteristics, if
you know nothing of the language or your location, or if you are held
in a country where anti-American or anti-Western attitudes prevail, you
should consider the consequences of your escape before attempting it.
If you conclude that an escape attempt is worthwhile, take terrorists
by surprise and you may make it. If their organization has a poor track
record of hostage safety, it may be worth the risk.

  • Rescue

    The
termination of any terrorist incident is extremely tense. If an assault
force attempts a rescue, it is imperative that you remain calm and out
of the way. Make no sudden moves or take any action by which you could
be mistaken for a terrorist and risk being injured or killed.

    Even
in a voluntary release or surrender by the terrorists, tensions are
charged and tempers volatile. Very precise instructions will be given
to the hostages, either by the captors or the police. Follow
instructions precisely. You may be asked to exit with hands in the air,
and you may be searched by the rescue team. You may experience rough
treatment until you are identified and the situation has stabilized.

Finally, it’s worth keeping in mind three facts about terrorism:

  • The overwhelming majority of victims have been abducted from their vehicles on the way to or from work.
  • A large number of people taken hostage ignored the most basic security precautions.

  • Terrorist tactics are not static. As precautions prove effective, they
change their methods. There is a brief “window of vulnerability” while
we learn to counter their new styles.

    Additional Precautions

  • World’s Smallest and Most Powerful
    Real-Time GPS Tracker!

Do not settle into a routine. Vary times and routes to and from work or social engagements.

    Remember,
there is safety in numbers. Avoid going out alone. When traveling long
distances by automobile, go in a convoy. Avoid back country roads and
    dangerous areas of the city.

    A privately owned car generally
offers the best security. Avoid luxury or ostentatious cars. Keep your
automobile in good repair and the gas tank at least half full. Driving
in the center lane of a multiple lane highway makes it difficult for
the car to be forced off the road.

    How to Evade a Wiretap

    March 7th, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

    The
technology used for decades by law enforcement agents to wiretap
telephones has a security flaw that allows the person being wiretapped
to stop the recorder remotely, according to research by computer
security experts who studied the system. It is also
possible to falsify the numbers dialed, they said.

Someone being wiretapped can easily employ these "devastating countermeasures" with off-the-shelf equipment.

    PROFESSIONAL
    WIRE TAP DETECTOR

    This
has implications not only for the accuracy of the intelligence that can
be obtained from these taps, but also for the acceptability and weight
of legal evidence derived from it.

    A spokeswoman for the F.B.I.
said "we’re aware of the possibility" that older wiretap systems may be
foiled through the techniques described in the paper. Catherine
Milhoan, the spokeswoman, said after consulting with bureau wiretap
experts that the vulnerability existed in only about 10 percent of
    state and federal wiretaps today.

"It is not considered an issue within the F.B.I.," Ms. Milhoan said.

    According
to the Justice Department’s most recent wiretap report, state and
federal courts authorized 1,710 "interceptions" of communications in
    2004.

To defeat wiretapping systems, the target need only send
the same "idle signal" that the tapping equipment sends to the recorder
when the telephone is not in use. The target could continue to have a
conversation while sending the forged signal.

    The tone, also
known as a C-tone, sounds like a low buzzing and is "slightly annoying
but would not affect the voice quality" of the call. It turns the
    recorder right off.

The paper can be found at http://www.crypto.com/papers/wiretapping.

        RF DETECTOR
    w/ BARGRAPH &
    FREQUENCY DISPLAY

The flaw underscores how surveillance technologies are not necessarily invulnerable to abuse, a law enforcement expert said.

    "If
you are a determined bad guy, you will find relatively easy ways to
avoid detection," "The good news is that most bad guys are not clever
and not determined. We used to call it criminal Darwinism."

    A
professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins University and technical
director of the Hopkins Information Security Institute, called the
technique "exceedingly clever" - particularly the part that showed ways
to confuse wiretap systems as to the numbers that have been dialed. The
professor added, however, that anyone sophisticated enough to conduct
this countermeasure probably had other ways to foil wiretaps with less
    effort.

                                 COUNTERSURVEILLANCE PROBE / MONITOR

    Not
all wiretapping technologies are vulnerable to the countermeasures, the
most vulnerable are the older systems that connect to analog phone
networks, often with alligator clips attached to physical phone wires.
Many state and local law enforcement agencies still use those systems.

    More
modern systems tap into digital telephone networks and are more closely
related to computers than to telephones. Under a 1994 law known as the
Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, telephone service
providers must offer law enforcement agencies the ability to wiretap
    digital networks.

    ADVANCED TRANSMITTER
    (BUG) DETECTOR

    But
in a technology twist, the F.B.I. has extended the life of the
vulnerability. In 1999, the bureau demanded that new telephone systems
keep the idle-tone feature for recording control in the new digital
networks, which are known as Calea networks because of the abbreviation
of the name of the legislation.

    The Federal Communications
Commission later overruled the F.B.I. and declared that providing the
idle tone was voluntary. The researchers’ paper states that marketing
materials from telecommunications equipment vendors show that the
"C-tone appears to be a relatively commonly available option."

    When
the researchers tried the same trick on newer systems that were
configured to recognize the C-tone, it had the same effect as on older
    systems, they found.

    Ms.
Milhoan of the F.B.I. said that the C-tone feature could be turned off
in the new systems and that when the bureau tested the method on
machines with the function turned off, the effect was "negligible."

"We were aware of it, we dealt with it, and we believe Calea has addressed it," she said.

    The
research was financed by the National Science Foundation’s Cyber Trust
program, which is intended to promote computer network security.

The security researchers discovered the new flaw while doing research on new generations of telephone-tapping equipment.

               WIRELESS CAMERA FINDER

    In
their paper, the researchers recommended that the F.B.I. conduct a
thorough analysis of its wiretapping technologies, old and new, from
the perspective of possible security threats, since the countermeasures
could "threaten law enforcement’s access to the entire
    spectrum of intercepted communications."

    There
is some indirect evidence that criminals might already know about the
vulnerabilities in the systems, because of "unexplained gaps" in some
    wiretap records presented in trials.

    Vulnerabilities
like the researchers describe are widely known to engineers creating
    countersurveillance systems.

    "The
people in the countersurveillance industry come from the surveillance
community," "We know what is possible, and our equipment needs to be
comprehensive and needs to counteract any form of surveillance."

Frequently Asked Questions About RFID Chips

    March 4th, 2006 by dpl-surveillance-equipment

    Q. What is RFID?
    A.
    Radio Frequency IDentification
is an automatic data capture technology that uses tiny tracking chips
affixed to products. These tiny chips can be used to track items at a
distance–right through someone’s purse, backpack, or wallet. Many of
the world’s largest manufacturing companies would like to replace the
bar code with these "spy chips," meaning that virtually every item on
the planet–and the people wearing and carrying those items–could be
    remotely tracked. There is currently
NO REGULATION protecting consumers from abuse of this technology.

    Q. What do RFID chips and tags look like?

    A. RFID chips are usually attached to antennas. The chip and antenna combination is called a "tag." RFID tags vary widely in size, shape and color.

    Q. What companies make or use RFID devices?
    A.
There is a list of 103 companies that were sponsors of the MIT Auto-ID
Center as of June 25, 2003. The MIT Auto-ID Center is the organization
that developed the infrastructure for RFID with the help of global
businesses like Gillette, Unilever and Procter & Gamble. We expect
that these companies will be among the first to adopt the technology.
We (DPL-Surveillance-Equipment.com) also make them. However, our customer’s are mainly interested in security and/or protection.

Q: How can I tell if there’s an RFID chip in my ____?
    A:
Since no law requires manufacturers to tell you when they’ve put an
RFID chip into a product or its packaging, the only way for an average
consumer to know if a product contains a chip is to see it with his or
her own eyes. (Or you can invest in an electronics lab and costly RFID
    readers.)

    HANDHELD TRACKING RECEIVER

    The
good news is that most RFID devices in commercial use today have a
fairly conspicuous antenna, ranging from the size of a fingernail to
the size of a full-sized sheet of paper. If you suspect that an item
contains a hidden RFID chip, here are a few search tips: Look closely
at any paper labels or stickers on the object. Peel them off and hold
them up to the light. Do you see flat, dark or metallic lines
converging on a central point? If so, you may be looking at the antenna
of an RFID chip. The least invasive ways to check for RFID chips in
shoes is to pull back the inner pads and look around or have the shoes
X-rayed. The problem with RFID chips is that they can be embedded in
plastic, foam, rubber or other materials at the manufacturing plant.
Short of destroying the shoes or having them X-rayed, it would be hard
to find deeply embedded chips. We are still researching the use of RFID
chips in shoes to determine the extent of any chipping. If the item is
made of cardboard, first scan its surface. Do you see a small, clear,
flat plastic housing the size of a match head stuck anywhere onto the
cardboard? If so, is it hooked up to a flat, metallic antenna or to
matte grey spray-on ink? If so, you are most likely looking at an RFID
tag. Pull the cardboard layers apart and look for a tell-tale antenna
embedded inside. It is rumored that International Paper, an Auto-ID
Center sponsor that makes packages for consumer goods, among other
things, may be devising ways to embed RFID tags directly into paper and
cardboard packaging. If you have access to an X-ray machine (say, if
you’re a veterinarian or a chiropractor) you can X-ray the item to see
if it contains an RFID tag. Since most antennas are metal-based, you
should be able to spot an RFID tag in this way.* Again, you are looking
for an antenna converging on a central dot-sized chip. If you find
something unusual and would like us to take a look, drop us an email.
*Note that some highly advanced defense department and academic
research chips do not have a "tell-tale antenna" since they combine the
antenna within the chip itself. These devices can be so small they
would be nearly impossible to find.

Q: What do I do if I find an RFID chip? Can I kill or disable it?
    A:
You can disable a chip for all practical purposes by disconnecting it
from its antenna. It is usually pretty obvious where the chip is
located in an RFID tag (all the antennas will run to it). Once you find
the tiny black square you can use a pair of scissors or a knife to cut
it off. To ensure that the tiny chip cannot later be read (assuming
anyone could even find a device so small), you can puncture it with a
straight pin, crush it, or pulverize it. (Note: While burning or
microwaving can destroy a chip, we do not recommend these methods
because of fire risk. See the Q & A below.) Do not try to "drown"
it, since water does not generally destroy RFID chips. Running a magnet
over the chip will not work, either.

Q: Can I microwave products to kill any hidden RFID tags they might contain?
    A:
While microwaving an RFID tag will destroy it (a microwave emits high
frequency electromagnetic energy that overloads the antenna, eventually
blowing out the chip), there is a good chance that the tag will burst
into flames first. The difficulty of destroying a hidden RFID chip is
one reason we need legislation making it illegal to hide a chip in an
    item in the first place.

Q: Are there some products that can’t be RFID chipped?
    A:
Items containing LIQUID or METAL are especially hard to chip. Liquids
tend to absorb the electromagnetic energy needed to power the chip,
while metal tends to reflect it and bounce it around in unpredictable
ways. Both problems can cause interference in the RFID signal sent by a
chip to the reader. These bugs are still being worked on. You can use
this information about metal to your advantage. Has your store recently
remodeled, replacing traditional metal shelving with new-fangled
plastic shelves, to prevent interference with RFID transmission?

Q: Will a magnet erase an RFID chip?
A: No, the chips are not magnetically encoded. Running a magnet over the chip or using a tape eraser will not affect the chip.

Q: Can chips in clothing survive the washer and dryer?
    A:
Yes. Many RFID tags are designed to withstand years of normal wear and
tear, including washing and drying. In fact, we know of at least one
uniform rental company that uses RFID chips to keep track of its
inventory. The chips hold up under the rough handling and commercial
    washings.

Q: Is it true there are plans to put RFID chips in Euro banknotes?
    A:
Hitachi has been working with the European Central Bank on the idea of
putting RFID chips into Euro banknotes. This would eliminate the
anonymity of cash by making it trackable. In essence, it would
"register" your cash to you when you get it from the teller or take it
out of the ATM. Euro banknotes could be RFID tagged as early as 2005.
See: "Euro Notes May be Radio Tagged" at http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t295-s2135074,00.html for details.

Q: Does U.S. currency contain RFID chips?

A: To the best of our knowledge, US currency does NOT currently contain RFID chips.

Q: What’s the read range of these chips? Can they be tracked by satellite?
    A:
There are two types of tags: "passive" (no independent power source)
and "active" (containing a battery or attached to one). Depending on a
number of factors (antenna size, RF frequency, environmental conditions
etc.) a passive tag can have a range of anywhere from 1 inch to 40
feet. Active tags can have a read range of miles or more. Most tags
being considered for use in consumer products are passive.

Q: Is DPL-Surveillance-Equipment.com aware of any RFID tags in shoes?

    A:
We are aware of at least one company that uses embedded RFID technology
in shoes for security purposes. According to the shoe company, the RFID
labels they use do not contain unique product information. Rather, the
RFID labels reportedly serve only to trigger an alarm if a consumer
leaves the store without paying for the shoes. (Note that at a June
2003 RFID conference in Chicago, Alien Technology displayed a Wal-Mart
Athletic Works® running shoe with an Alien RFID tag inserted under the
insole. Alien said that the shoe was for display purposes only and that
there were no planned/current trials or applications in those shoes.
However, there was much excitement at the conference over the
possibilities for RFID chips in shoes. Their stated reason for wanting
to chip shoes was to keep shoe sizes together and match pairs. In our
opinion, pervasive RFID chipping of shoes will become a frightening
reality unless we tell companies that we will not buy products with
    chips!)
